Chapter Eight

Felicity paced back and forth in front of Joshua, who sat yawning on Bruce's pack.
"OK, we're totally lost."
"Check." Josh held up a finger.
"We have no map."
"Check again." and then softer, "Thanks to you."
"And we don't even have a clue where we are going."
Josh stood up, "Well look at the bright side," he said sarcastically, pulling an energy bar out of Bruce's pack, "Bruce is such a pig we're never going to starve."
Felicity snatched the bar, ripped it open and chewed on it angrily.
She looked around for something NOT covered in nature to sit on then, finding nothing, hesitated then dropped her brand new $500 pack on the ground and sat on it, her head down.
After a couple of minutes of brooding, Felicity heard leaves rustling and looked up.
Josh had his head buried in leaves, looking for a trace of humanity.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
Josh turned around, "Oh,look who finally stopped feeling sorry for herself" He stopped to scratch one of his many mosquito bites me had gotten, trying to find his way back to camp.
"If you must know, I'm trying to find a way back to camp."
"Why didn't you ask me for help?" she asked offended.
Josh snorted, "Are you for real?!?"
He straightened his back, pushed out his chest, put his hand on his hip, and mimicked Felicity.
"I'm a perfect princess. Do this, do that. I don't want to get my hands wet. Eeekk water."
And that was it, Felicity was done. Even though nobody had seen her cry since kindergarten when her teacher cut her bread into rectangles instead of triangles, but all the tears she had been holding in since she got paired up with Josh flowed out.
Josh felt terrible. He hadn't meant to make her cry.Just annoy her a little. He walked up to her to say something clever, like they do in cheesy movies, but when no one-liners came he just dragged his pack over to hers and waited for her to stop bawling.
And then, she did the most unbelievable thing.
"So, tell me about your family."
Josh looked at Felicity like she was crazy.
"Excuse me?"
"You know , your Mom, Dad, home life." Felicity asked this, partly to pass time while she calmed down but deep down inside, she really did want to know about his home life, a little, maybe.
Josh was surprised. Nobody had really asked about his life before, except for once in second grade when they did all about me books (and he didn't even get a chance to present his),but he had been waiting for someone to care for so long that he didn't really care who he spilled to.
He told her everything, about the time he was bad intentionally so Santa would bring him the coal his Mom needed for a barbecue, how great his Mom was, how much he hated his Dad."
"Anyway, I hope my Mom is O.K. when she finds out I'm missing." he concluded. He shuffled his feet on the ground a little uncomfortably then saw a shadow fall over him.
"Get up." He saw a hand reach out to him.
"Wha...?"
"Get up, We're getting out of here."

Chapter Seven

Truthfully, the first two days weren't all that bad.
Bruce found that tracking was almost as fun as video games, Kimberly didn't mind hiking as much as she thought she would and even Josh and Felicity were getting along.
Not that they were friends. No, far from it. Now they just had a little more respect for each other, and a threat to send them home if they didn't!
On That third day, Josh woke from his tent to the recorded sound of a rooster crowing (It would have been a real one but as Mike explained, the camp couldn't get the permits.)
He propped himself up with his left arm and rubbed the sleep out his liquidy blue eyes.
Joshua staggered outside and was soon joined by the rest of the campers. He looked up. The sky was still pink.
"It must be barely morning," he thought, "Maybe 4:00 or 5:00"
Mike, who was already outside, blew his whistle to signal the campers to find their partners. As soon as everyone was together he started, " O.K., I know you guys were expected two more days of camp but we're going to have to cut it short. The National Weather Association says that there is going to be a big storm so we have to close down for the week."
The crisp morning air was filled with moans. Even though everyone missed the comforts of home they were getting excited about camp, and they were worried about their non-refundable deposits they made for the trip they put a dent in most of their saving funds for the new Brain Smashers game (Except for Bruce of course who had got an advance copy.)
"Don't worry though, your deposits will be returned and the trip will be rescheduled."
After that announcement everyone was noticeably less upset.
"And," he continued, "We're still having the Tracking Games." This got a cheer. Mike had explained that tracking was an activity were you would get put you in a covered jeep blindfolded and drop you in the middle of nowhere with a compass,a map, and some supplies and you have to find your way back. Bruce wasn't very interested until he was told that they did tracking in the army(and since he had a brother in the army this made a big difference).
"Oh, and don't forget. I'm awarding the Jr. Ranger badge today." That got a bigger cheer.
"OK, now all of you go eat your breakfast and get your packs, then lets go go go!"
Mike had never seen anyone eat so fast. The blueberry muffins( all natural of course) were sucked through black holes of mouths. He was horrified and fascinated at the same time. He had never had a more excited group of kids.
After the breakfast tables were clean and backpacks were strapped on every body's backs Mike gathered the campers together for the final announcement before the Tracking Games.
"OK campers, I know you all have been waiting to see who is the newest Jr. Ranger." The kids waited, the air around them almost sizzled with anticipation.
"And the winner is...Bruce!" Felicity and Josh stood, open mouthed clones of each other. They both thought they would win, even though they knew Bruce deserved it more.
Bruce stepped up to receive his membership card. Mike pulled the card out of his pocket and handed it to him. He them picked up a stuffed bear.
"Uh... you get this too. I don't know why." Bruce grinned then blushed and stuffed the bear in his pack.
"OK campers, I know you're used to walking from place to place but since where we going is so far and you need to save your energy for the return..." He pulled a pair of keys out of his pocket and pressed a button. The Jeep let out two shrill cheeps then was silent.
"This is the first Jeep. Two more will be around in a few minutes to pick the rest of you up."
Kimberly bit her lip then voiced the question everyone was thinking, "What if we get lost?"
Mike looked like he had heard this question many times before,"Don't worry about it. We have several mounted cameras around the forest area of the park. Speakers too. You probably won't be able to spot any of them. They are hidden so they won't interfere with the environment. As soon as you get lost we will spot you and contact you via speaker."
Mike hopped in the front seat of the jeep, "I want Dominique, Bruce, Julia, and Josh in this Jeep."
Felicity was ecstatic, If he just forgot about her for one more...
"Oh, and Felicity too."
Darn.
Josh squirmed uncomfortably in the cloth covered seats that looked like they had seen better days. He really wasn't comfortable with being blindfolded.
"And wait for the alarm to go." Mike was saying.
Josh shrugged it off. Felicity was probably listening.
After a couple of minutes of silence the Jeep hit a few bumps, slowed, then stopped.
"OK! All you crazies, OUT!" Josh grabbed his sleeping bag and pack, which he had previously taken off and stumbled out of the Jeep.
"OK you guys count to 30 then take off your blindfolds. When you hear the alarm start tracking!"
They heard the Jeep's tires skid then silence.
One Mississippi, Two Mississippi's, Felicity counted. When she got to 30 Mississippi she took off her blindfold and folded it neatly. Then she stowed it in her pack and looked around. Everyone except for Josh was gone.
"Where did everyone go?" she asked, puzzled.
Josh rolled his eyes, where do you think? They left already!"
"But that's not fair! The alarm didn't go off yet!"
"Get a life!" Josh sneered.
Felicity sat on a nearby rock, more than a little hurt, and waited for the alarm to sound.
About 5 minutes later she heard a blaring "CLANG CLANG CLANG" vibrate through the forest.
She got up, "Lets go."
After walking around for a few minutes she stopped and shook her head, " Wait a second, I completely forgot about the map. Get yours out."
"Why mine?" he complained.
"I said" she repeated, this time more slowly and more stressed, "Get yours out."
Josh removed the pack from his back and opened it.
Wait a second, he thought, this isn't mine this is...
"This is Bruce's pack." he said
"What?"
"I said, this is Bruce's pack." he repeated, "I must have picked up the wrong one and Bruce never got a map. He was in the bathroom."
"But Mike said not to take off your p-" then stopped. Like Josh actually listened.
"It's OK, I have mine." She grabbed it out of her pack then smoothed it out.
"OK, according to this we are here," she pointed to a seemingly random stop on the map, "And we need to be here." She pointed to the campsite.
"No prob," Josh grabbed the map and started to look it over.
"Hey!" Felicity tried to grab it but Josh held it high over her head. This would've worked if it had not been for the fact that Josh had yet to get his growth spurt and Felicity was a couple inches taller than him.She jumped and succeeded in knocking the map out of his hand but she couldn't grab it.
They both watched as it floated out of her grip and into the forest. They looked at each other, at the woods then sped off as fast as they could after it.
10 minutes later they still had not caught up with it. Felicity squatted to catch her breath then thought she heard something.
Gurgle, Gurgle.
"Josh, do you hear something?"
He stopped and listened.
Gurgle, Gurgle.
"Water! Aww, come on." He ran off with a burst of speed then stopped short.
It was a river, raging forward. A branch snapped off a above tree and fell into the river. I was immediately snapped and the pieces were swept off with the current.
Josh cringed then impulsivly looked up. The map floated above the river than landed across the other side. Josh let out all the air in his lungs with a loud "Woosh".
"That was close!" he screamed to Felicity who was still catching up. Felicity looked exceedingly relived.
Then a gust of wind blew across the clearing the were standing in and blew the map into the river."
"Crud!" Josh dropped his bags and chased after it. "Help me!"
Felicity bcked away, wild eyed, "No!"
He hissed his teeth and chased after it. After jumping in the water twice Josh came up with a soggy mushy blob of paper. He walked oer to Felicity and threw the blob at her feet.
"Great, we're doomed."

Chapter Six

Felicity was asleep. Still, she was mildly aware of what was happening around her. Suddenly the bus came to an abrupt stop and jolted her to full conciousness. She didn't show she was awake though, trick her Dad taught her.
She heard a thundering of footsteps, then scilence.
Ten voices. Josh and someone else.
More voices. Coming toward her!!!!!!!!
She tensed up and opened her eyes a crack. Josh was coming!
"One step." she thought, "If he gets one step closer," and of course he did.
Felicity immeadiatly grabbed his hand and twisted it between his back.
Her dad had made her take self defence classes. Just in case.
"Nobody, Not even My DAD touches me NO ONE!"
Ms. Wilder gasped. She had seen some prety strange behavior from Felicity but nothing this...violent.
"Felicity, let go of Joshua right now."
"Gladly." she thought as she dropped his grimy hands like touching them would give her cancer.
Their teacher continued, "Now, I put you two together so you could learn to work together and I expect you to. Am I clear?"
Josh nodded. So did Felicity( but considerably less enthused).
Josh filed off the bus. Felicity turned to do the same but she was stopped.
"And Felicity, if I see any more of this nonscense you will be booted of this trip, now go catch up with your buddy."
As soon as the class was back under control Ms. Wilder lead them to a field in front of a small cabin. There they were greeted by a tall, lean man in green pants, a green shirt, and a wide brimmed had.
"Hi everyone," he said, "I'm Rander Mike and I'm going to be leading your first activity at Camp Silverlake: The daily hike!"
"Hike!?!" Felicity yelped. "It's like..." she paused to check her watch, "Only 6:23!"
Ranger Mike chuckled, "I've been up since 3:00." Afew kids gasped in awe.
"Ok now, because this is your first hike I will be going easy on you. How 'bout to Silver lake Pond. Thats what this camp is named after ya' know?"
"Duh!" Felicity thought.
Mike was still speaking, "It's only a one mile hike."
"One Mile!" Felicity shuddered at the thought. The most she had ever walked was to school. She only lived a block away and she never did that again.
Mike frowned, "Well actually it is a two mile hike there and back but if you don't like this trail there is a nice scenic fifteen mile trail a mile that-a-ways." he teased pointing to the right.
"No!" Felicity hollered. "The two mile one is fine. Right Josh?"
Josh, who was standing beside her, nodded, surpried Felicity was talking to her.
Mike grinned, "Ok, two mile hike it is. Now before we start the hike there are two things we have to do."
Mike lead them into the cabin.
"The first thing we have to do is get rid of all electronic devices."
There was collective groan thrughout the the tiny cabin.
Bruce raised his hand, then started speaking without waiting to be called on, "But I just got Brain Smashers IV for my game station MIni!" he whined pulling it ou of his pocket.
"Well," Mike added "I bet you'll find someting more fun to do!"
"I doubt it." He grumbled under his breath.
Mike convineantly ignored him and passed out bags to hold the electronics in.
A girl raised her hand, "Do watches count?"
Mike smiled, "What do they run on?"
She rolled her eyes, "Batteries, what else."
"Ok then. There's your answer."
"What else would they run on?" she asked, mildly curious for the first time since they got there.
The Ranger raised his rm and showed his watch, "Well mine runs on solar power."
She gasped and ran to see it, "Cool!!!!! Were'd ya' get it?"
He smiled smugly, "Bonus."
He collected the bags and put them in a chest with a lock.
"Ok now, each of you get a bag. They hae water and energy bars in them."
As soon as the words 'energy bars' were spoken Felicity's ears pricked up.
She realisedshe hadn't eaten anything since a dry pop-tart on the bus and she had only eaten half of it. For an eleven year old she had more mture tastes.
She grbbed her bag and swllowed the two bars in there. She then grbbed Josh and ate his too.
"Hey!" Josh protested, "She Mhmmgmmh." Felicity thrust her hand oer his mouth.
"Josh's bag doesn't have ny bars in it." She declared, quicky recovering..
Mike checked the bag then smiled, "Nice save. Keep it up and you'll be on your way to becoming a Jr. Ranger."
Felicity cocked her head, "What's that?"
"On every tour we award kid one. Someone who is observent, brave, all that stuff. They get a badge like this," he explained holding it up, "And wenever they go to any one of our camps across the U.S. they get special privialiges. Kinda like backstage psses."
Felicity shrugged her shoulders, "Well, I'm never coming to another one of these crummy parks again so it doesn't matter." she whispered, even though she was secretly interested.
Mike opened the door, "Ok you wimps, lets go alredy."
Everyone filed excitedly out the door to begin the hike.
"Bet you don't last five minutes." Josh snickered.
"Hey!" Felicity started, offended, "I.."
"Make tht five seconds. You're stnding in an ant pile."
Felicity yelped and jumped up in terror. She didn't like anything with more then four legs.
As he watched Joshua rolling on the ground, laughing his heart out Mike stared, sighed, then popped two all natural asprins.
"I better get a raise for this." he grudgingly thought.

Chapter Five

Felicity pouted in her seat. She should be sleeping on her new micro beaded travel pillow (Now arched to relieve tension in neck And shoulders!) but of course, she couldn't fall asleep sitting next to Joshua.
She shuffled in her seat and tried to sit as close to the window as possible. That wasn't very easy because Joshua was sprawled aross the seat, taking up what little space she had. She tried to catch Kimberly's eye a few times but Kimberly was too caught up in her fasinating conversation on lipgloss with Maria Sanchez. Once, about a half hour into the drive, Felicity got Kimberly's attention. She was rewarded with a sympathetic look. Then Kimberly turned right back to Maria and the question of which lipgloss is the shiniest.
She sighed, then yawned. She really was tierd.
"Well," She thought, "If I just close my eyes for a-" and she was gone. Drifting off to sleep before she could finish her thought.
Joshua looked across his seat. Fianally she was asleep. Now he could get to more important isues. Like the mercy championships.
He turned around so his back faced Felicity and his front faced Bruce.
Now Bruce was not the shinest apple in the fruit bowl, and to illustrate my piont: When he brought a paper machae sculpture of himself for his "All About Me" project, evem Mrs. Wilder had a hard time telling them apart.
But what he lacked in intellegence he made up for in strengh. Bruce had almost singlehandedly won the last tug-of-war matches with neighboring classes(Truthfully everyone was holding the rope but only on student was pulling.) That meant, of course that he would be one of the fianalists. In fact, some people wouldn't even challenge him. They just forfeited which was just fine for him. Now in the presense of everyone the mercy finals were about to begin.
Bruce quickly won the first two matches, bending back Josh's fingers with uncanny skill. Josh,However, won the third. He proceded to win twi more rounds. Then Bruce, not to be undone, won the sixth.
Josh cracked his finger sto get ready for the seventh and final round when Ms. WIlder came over and stopped them. Three kids ad already broken fingers playing that game. She didn't want to add two more kids to the list.
"So," Bruce asked,"How are we going to end this?"
Josh thought, any other contest of strengh he would be sure to lose and there was no contest of skill he could do in the bus so he would have do do a contest of luck. Or Not-so-luck.
"How 'bout a coin toss," he said as uninterestedly as he could. "Heads I win, tails you lose."
Now a average person would see through that trick in a few moments Bruce was not an average person. Still Josh was worried Bruce sense the trick. For a second he thought he saw the light of regognition on Bruce's face but it passed as quickly as it came.
"Uh,Ok." Bruce fished a quater out of his pocket and flicked it against his thumb.
"Head's!" Bruce called as it arched then started to fall.
Josh snached it out of the air and smacked it in the back of his hand.
"Tails, you lose." Bruce grunted and plunged his hand into his pocket again. This time he came up with the $5.00 bill he had previously staked on his victory.
Joshua snached the bill and added it to the other 5 his Mother had slipped him. Bruce made a mental note to pummel Josh later.
Suddenly he felt a jolt.
The bus had stopped.
They were there.
Josh peered out the window. An old faded sign stard back at him.
Camp SilverLake.
"Single file." Ms. Wilder said, knowing nobody was listening. How right she was. All the students sped off the bus, happy to be able to finally get up after hours of driving.
Screams of "Where's the bathroom?" echoed throughout the camp.
Josh ran out to join everyone else when he was stopped.
Ms. Wilder.
"Your buddy?" she asked.
Felicity! He had forgoten about her. He groaned and went to wake her up.
He trugged over to where Felicity was still sleeping and streached out his hand to tap her lightly on the shoulder.
He had bearly brushed her shoulder when...
Felicity's eyes shot open, her arm shot out and before he knnew it his arm was twisted behind his back!
